Rolls-Royce SMR have been selected to begin building Small Modular Reactor power stations in the UK. Working with Amentum as their programmer, they aim to build a fleet of SMRs across the country, with an eye on the global market. This incredible project is expected to produce:
- 470 Megawatts of low-carbon energy.
- 1,000,000 Homes powered for >60 years
- £54 billion to the economy
- 1358 MWthf to domestic boilers
The new SMR stations are a solution far more accessible and easier to build than conventional nuclear power stations. The SMR power plants will be built in Rolls-Royce factories, transported in parts, and delivered across the country to be built by trusted tier 1 contractors such as Laing O’Rourke and Bam across the country. This means the SMRs can be built in a fraction of the time it takes to build other buildings of their type. They expect to see these power stations hooked up to the grid as early as 2030.
This project is projected to generate over 3,000 jobs at the peak of its construction and many more to care for its maintenance in the future. This will be a huge boon to the construction industry and go a long way to the country’s Net Zero goals.
